AthletiCo Athletic Trainers Provide Valuable Health Resource to Community

Throughout the month of March, certified athletic trainers are being recognized for their commitment to helping people prevent injuries and stay active. As the employer of the largest number of certified athletic trainers in the nation, AthletiCo provides Athletic Training Outreach services to over 150 teams and organizations throughout Illinois and Milwaukee including professional sports organizations, performing arts organizations, high schools, colleges and universities, industrial and commercial organizations, rugby clubs, endurance events, golf events, and tournaments and special events.

Athletic training is practiced by Certified Athletic Trainers (ATs), health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, elevation, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.

A day in the life of an AT might include:

•     Preparing athletes for practice or competition, which includes taping, bandaging, and bracing
•     Evaluating injuries
•     Developing conditioning programs
•     Implementing treatment and rehabilitation protocols in collaboration with team physicians and physical and occupational therapists
•     Following up with physicians, parents, coaches, and clinicians regarding injury status

•     AthletiCo AT’s duties require medical knowledge and strong decision-making skills obtained through extensive experience and education.
•     AthletiCo ATs have over 1,350 years of combined experience and an average of 9 years of experience per AT.
•     AthletiCo ATs represent over 75 undergraduate and graduate institutions throughout the United States.
•     To become certified athletic trainers, students must graduate with a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited professional athletic training education program and pass a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification. Once certified, they must meet ongoing continuing education requirements in order to remain certified.

The theme of this year’s National Athletic Training Month is “Sport Safety is a Team Effort.” The National Athletic Trainers’ Association represents and supports 30,000 members of the athletic training profession through education and research.
