Jamaican Native Poet, Audrey McLaren has Launched her Newest Collection of Poems "I am the Djembe" at the League of Canadian Poets Annual General Meeting at St John's Newfoundland on June 20th

Poet Audrey McLaren has delivered another inspiring book of poems. In her latest work, I am the Djembe, Audrey allows us access to the rich, complex emotional tapestry that is her life.

The poems are earthy and racy. They resonate with a spirit that bears close resemblance to the Audrey that so many know.

"I am the Djembe speaks to us through the eyes and voices of both the child and adult." Audrey has often said in I am the Djembe, that the bare faced child has grown up to do everything she threatened to do in Bareface Pickney, her first anthology of poems. Still sensitive to the cruelties of an unjust world, she continues to lament about the treatment of children and the contradictions of both home and church, she nonetheless embraces and celebrates her rich Jamaican cultural heritage.

Audrey McLaren is a graduate of Pembroke Hall Secondary School, Shortwood Teachers' College, and the University of the West Indies, where she completed a Master of Arts degree in Heritage Studies. She currently teaches in Canada.
