"Tales of a One-Room Country School" features a collection of short stories that revolve around a South Dakota country boy who was offered a unique education in a unique environment. Perkins writes of the benefits that his one-room country school offered its students, such as the sense of pride the small, personal setting of the school instilled in the students and the teachers. From the clothes they wore to the struggles they endured, "Tales of a One-Room Country School" reawakens every detail associated with his education.

In his book, Perkins describes the winter of 1938:
"It was the winter of 1938, one of the worst on record. There was snow, blowing, and blizzards for days and weeks on end all winter. One time we were snowbound for two solid weeks. That was the year I froze my feet several times. To this day I have to wear heavy socks at all times to give my feet a feeling of warmth. The nerves never have recovered."

Perkins' book is not only a tribute to the education the students received in this one-room school, but to the teachers who made sacrifices to help lay the groundwork of a strong education for all of the children. His book makes a great addition to the collections of history buffs, educators, and genealogy enthusiasts.
