Big Brothers Big Sisters is Searching for Mentors

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Washington (BBBSNW) is gearing up for the new school year and for new mentors for its School Buddies Mentoring Program.

Whatcom & Skagit Counties, Wash. (PRWEB) September 22, 2009 --- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Washington (BBBSNW) is gearing up for the new school year and for new mentors for its School Buddies Mentoring Program. These adults will be matched in one-to-one mentoring relationships with students from 13 local Bellingham, Ferndale and Everson schools. The program currently serves 130 children with this program and hopes to add 90 new mentoring matches before the end of the year.

Mentoring matches in the School Buddies Program meet for one hour each week at the mentee's school, throughout the school year. During their meetings mentors ("Bigs") and mentees ("Littles") spend time together doing various activities: crafts, board games, basketball, playing on the playground and working on school projects. Mentors are also needed for the Community-Based Program, which has Bigs and Littles meet 6-12 hours a month out in the community. Bigs can be both individuals and couples.

"Research shows how quality, positive relationships with adults help improve the chance of success at school, and we have seen this first hand with the School Buddies Program," Alderwood Elementary School Principal Stephanie Corn said. "For many of our students, their attitudes towards school improve, their attendance improves, and they become more focused on learning while they are here."

BBBSNW representatives are also available for presentations on the impact of mentoring on the local community. To volunteer as a mentor, or to set up a presentation for a business or service club, please contact Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Washington at (360) 671-6400 or visit www.bbbs-nw.org
