With a rise in the popularity of Mediterranean food in general, coupled with one of 2012’s most talked about weight loss plans; the Dukan diet, it’s no wonder retail chains are reporting big increases in squid sales.
BBQBarbecues, a reputable growing name in the online retailing world is always on the lookout for the latest and greatest recipes to tell their followers about. Based on the popularity of this dish, it certainly looks as if it will be making the rounds on their Facebook and Twitter page (#BBQBarbecues).
The calamari dish in question looks absolutely delicious, no matter what kind of diet you’re on. If this is cooked at a BBQ party and served to your guests, there’s going to be an awful lot of compliments heading your way... assuming it isn’t burnt beyond recognition.
One of the biggest benefits of calamari is the fact that it’s such a quick cooking food. It can be on the grill for just a minute or two before it’s prime and ready to eat. This combined with its health aspects: vitamin B2, mineral phosphorus and iron absorption, really does make it one of the easiest and healthiest things to grill up when pushed for time.
The barbecue retailer is more than aware of this and Paul Dickinson, Product Manager at BBQBarbecues talked about the free recipe guide that’s currently on offer. “At BBQBarbecues, we’re all about customer experience and satisfaction. It’s great that we sell barbecues, but we also want to offer that bit more than nobody else is willing to do. We provide a lot of articles on the basics of barbecuing, maintenance and cooking; amongst that is an extremely popular barbecue recipes webpage which has over 17,000 views since becoming active last summer. As we find out about new popular recipes we add it to this page and over time the page has grown increasingly larger!”
So what has this new recipe meant for retailers? Well, immediately a huge increase in the sales of squid in comparison to the same time last year. Waitrose have reported a 230% increase on imported squid sales along with Sainsbury’s who have also noted ‘steady rise’ in fresh squid sales over the last few months. Hopefully this trend carries on into the barbecue market and has everyone buying BBQ’s ready for some summer squid.
BBQBarbecues currently operates on the new, rebranded and ever-expanding Online Home Retail Network which currently features around 50 websites which sell everything from Stuart Turner shower pumps and gardening equipment to hedge cutters and vacuum cleaners. Online Home Retail Limited first started out as Plumbworld Ltd back in 1999 and since then it has been bought by the Grafton Group PLC in 2006 and received a major rebrand in 2012. The business now employs 60 people in its purpose built warehouse/offices and has a total turnover nearing £25 million per year.
