Pork Barrel BBQ’s competition barbecue team, the reigning Grand Champions of the Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle, will attempt to retain the Grand Champion title at the 20th annual Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle this weekend on historic Pennsylvania Avenue.
Pork Barrel BBQ and 41 other professional barbecue teams, including pitmasters from TLC and Destination America’s hit TV show BBQ Pitmasters, Tuffy Stone of Cool Smoke, Myron Mixon of Jack’s Old South, and Johnny Trigg of Smokin’ Triggers, will be putting their barbecue skills to the test and competing for over $40,000 in cash and prizes and the title of Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle Grand Champion. Over 150,000 visitors are expected to attend the nation’s largest food and music festival in downtown DC.
The Pork Barrel BBQ competition barbecue team has a unique history with the BBQ Battle. Co-founders of Pork Barrel BBQ, Heath Hall and Brett Thompson, spent many years just steps away from the BBQ Battle grounds working as U.S. Senate staffers on Capitol Hill. They followed their dreams (and taste buds) and started making barbecue sauce from their home kitchens, entered the BBQ Battle contest in 2009 and took second place in the America’s Best Sauce contest for their Pork Barrel BBQ Original BBQ Sauce.
Since then, the BBQ duo have appeared on ABC’s hit reality show “Shark Tank”, competed and won numerous awards at barbecue contests around the country, and expanded their lineup of award-winning barbecue sauce to include: Original, Sweet, Mustard, and Carolina Vinegar as well as their All-American Spice Rub, Pork Barrel BBQ Peanuts, and the world’s first barbeque-scented fragrance, Que – eau de barbeque.
Last year, Pork Barrel BBQ earned the prestigious title of Grand Champions at the 2011 Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle, and soon after the most-recognized entrepreneurs in barbecue opened their first Pork Barrel BBQ Restaurant in Alexandria, VA, which the current issue of Food & Wine Magazine named them among the “Best BBQ Pit Masters and Grill Geniuses” in America.
During the two-day contest, Pork Barrel BBQ’s pitmaster, Heath Hall, will participate in a Grill Master Series head-to-head cookoff hosted by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) as part of the KCBS Great American Barbecue Tour series that is stopping at barbecue events around North America. The Grill Master showdown will be held at 3:30pm on Sunday at The Great American Barbecue Tour demonstration trailer.
Chef Victor Albisu, a graduate of the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu School in Paris, will be one of the judges for the Grill Master Series. Albisu, was the Taster’s Choice winner at the 2010 and 2012 St. Jude’s Annual Gourmet Gala. BLT Steak, under his direction in the kitchen, was named Power Spot of the Year in the 2010 RAMMY Awards. Chef Albisu recently made his TV debut as a guest judge on FOX’s hit show “Hell’s Kitchen” and has served as both participant and judge at several culinary competitions and special events throughout the city.
The Pork Barrel BBQ competition barbecue team has a strong track record of success at barbecue competitions across the country, both with scoring favorably with certified judges and having their sauces named most popular in People’s Choice contests. The team, led by pitmasters and Pork Barrel BBQ co-founders Hall and Thompson, is the reigning Purdue National Chicken Champion and sales their award-winning BBQ sauces in grocery stores across the country, including Safeway, Harris Teeter, The Fresh Market, Giant, Whole Foods, Central Market, and Costco.
