Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) June 3, 2010

Wrightsville Beach was voted the top beach in North Carolina as determined by the 2010 Beach BestQuest conducted by BestofNorthCarolina.com, the online social community which focuses on what's best in North Carolina. The community consists of the people who live, work, and travel to the state. The winner is determined by the community and the process is completely driven by them without any guidance from the editorial staff of BestofNorthCarolina.com

"As in our previous BestQuest (for barbecue), the results demonstrate that conventional wisdom and media promotion don't necessarily reflect what people like. In this case, native North Carolinians overwhelming chose beaches on the coast as opposed to the Outer Banks which tend to get more national attention and visitors from out of state," said Hillary Ryland, BestofNorthCarolina.com's Editor-in-Chief. "What is great about our community and social media in general, is that we stay out of the way and let our members drive the conversation. This provides a more accurate and unfiltered picture of what people truly like, rather than guided questions or a few choices selected by writers or advertisers."

The winning beach along with the other top selections were announced on May 22nd at the BestofNorthCarolina.com "Carolina Beach Bash" to benefit The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The event featured a beach themed barbecue, prizes and live Carolina Beach Music provided by Doctor Peter Renato, Lionel Cornelius, Sr. from The Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose, and Billy Scott of Billy Scott and the Prophets. Jerry Carraway, one of the members of the community who voted for his favorite beach, won $500 in a random drawing from all who participated in the BestQuest during the event.

Along with Wrightsville Beach, other top choices were Emerald Isle, Ocean Isle, Topsail, Atlantic and Oak Island. Ocracoke Island, a perennial critic's favorite among many national and international travel magazines and websites, finished 8th in the voting. The next BestQuest from BestofNorthCarolina.com will be to determine what the community thinks is the best resort in North Carolina. The winner will be revealed in September.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation JDRF 40th Anniversary

About The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation JDRF is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.4 billion to diabetes research, including more than $100 million in FY2009.
