Berkeley College Selects New President

The Board of Trustees of Berkeley College has named Dario A. Cortes, PhD, as President effective July 7, 2008.

(Vocus/PRWEB ) April 3, 2008 -- The Board of Trustees of Berkeley College has named Dario A. Cortes, PhD, as President effective July 7, 2008. Currently President and Executive Director of The American School Foundation in Mexico City, Dr. Cortes will assume responsibilities as President of Berkeley College following the close of the academic year.

In making the announcement, Board Chairman Kevin Luing said, “Dr. Cortes’ experience in higher education in both New York and New Jersey, as well as his strategic vision and leadership skills, make him the right person to lead Berkeley College during this time of growth. I am confident he can continue our legacy of being student-centered and providing access with success as the college expands.”

“I look forward to the tremendous opportunity and challenge to lead this institution,” said Dr. Cortes. “I believe that my 25 years in higher education qualify me to guide Berkeley College to its next level of achievement by advancing its reputation for excellence in teaching and learning. I also bring a personal commitment to diversity and to student-centered education.”

Dr. Cortes earned a BA degree from City University of New York (CUNY) Queens College, an MA degree from the University of Virginia, and a PhD degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has completed post-graduate work at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, and in 2008 he was named a Klingenstein Fellow of Columbia University Teachers College.

Prior to his current position Dr. Cortes was Vice President for Academic Affairs at Fashion Institute of Technology, the State University of New York. He also has served as Dean at Fairleigh Dickinson University; and Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Maryland at College Park. In addition, Dr. Cortes has had many senior administrative and faculty positions at the John Hopkins University; North Carolina State University and the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Dr. Cortes has received numerous teaching awards, fellowships and honors. He is an accomplished author, editor, lecturer and conference leader.

In Mexico City Dr. Cortes serves on the Educational Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales (COMEXI). His prior board service includes the Executive Committee of the American Council of Education, Council of Fellows; Chairman of the Board of Zhejiang International Institute of Fashion Technology, Zhejiang, China; the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, NYC; Instituto Superior de Empresa y Moda, Madrid, Spain; American Conference of Academic Deans; and the Admissions Task Force for the College Board.

A leader in business education for more than 75 years, Berkeley College (www.BerkeleyCollege.edu) currently maintains an enrollment of over 6,000 students, with more than 600 international students in its Baccalaureate and Associate degree programs. The College has two New York campuses in Midtown Manhattan and White Plains, an Extension Center in Lower Manhattan in the Wall Street area, and four New Jersey campuses located in West Paterson, Paramus, Woodbridge, and Newark. In addition, the College offers Berkeley College Online and its Corporate Learning Partnership program. All campuses are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
