Dr. Betty Diamond, Prominent Immunology Researcher and Member of Institute of Medicine, Named Head of Feinstein Institute's Center for Autoimmune Diseases
Manhasset, NY (Vocus/PRWEB ) April 11, 2007 -- The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research today announced the appointment of Betty A. Diamond, MD, to lead its Center for Autoimmune Diseases. One of the New York area's most prominent medical researchers, Dr. Diamond was recruited from Columbia University Medical Center, where she served as chief of rheumatology and the Dorothy and Daniel Silberberg Professor of Medicine and Microbiology at the university's College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Diamond, a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, receives more than $7.5 million annually from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other sources, placing her as the third-largest recipient of NIH funds in the New York metropolitan area.
Dr. Diamond brings 40 additional investigators and scientists with her to The Feinstein, where they are collaborating on cures to autoimmune and other diseases by translating their scientific findings into practical use.
"The recruitment of Dr. Diamond and her research team is a major coup that elevates the stature of the North Shore-LIJ Health System's research enterprise, and is a critical step toward realizing our vision of establishing The Feinstein Institute as an international resource for curing disease," said Kevin J. Tracey, MD, The Feinstein Institute's director and chief executive officer. "Professor Diamond joins our relatively young Institute at a critical time in its history. The expertise she brings is an ideal fit into our clinical and translational research mission at a time that we are enjoying explosive growth and success in moving research advances to the bedside."
Dr. Diamond joins The Feinstein's already renowned roster of 48 principal investigators and 450 research personnel. The capacity to translate scientific findings into practical use was one of the factors that attracted Dr. Diamond to The Feinstein. "The Feinstein Institute has an excellent reputation and a nationally recognized lupus laboratory," she said. "Its close relationship with the North Shore-LIJ Health System and its 15 hospitals provides ample opportunities for clinical trials, offering a bridge between scientific investigation and applying those findings to combat human disease."
A graduate of Radcliffe College and Harvard Medical School, both in Cambridge, MA, Dr. Diamond has had a long and varied career as physician, researcher and educator. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the NIH Merit Award, as well as both the Distinguished Investigator and Klemperer Awards from the American College of Rheumatology. Her work has been published in more than 100 peer-reviewed journals, articles and books.
As a member of the Institute of Medicine, the nation's most prestigious honorific societies, she serves as a national advisor on matters of biomedical science, medicine and health. She is also a member of numerous other professional societies, including the American College of Rheumatology and the American Society for Clinical Investigation.
Prior to joining Columbia, she served at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine for 25 years in a variety of leadership capacities that included: chief of rheumatology, director of the Medical Scientist Training Program, the Mitrani Chair in Cardiovascular Research and the Murray and Evelyne Weinstock Chair in Immunology.
