Author C.J. Walery remembers the tranquil wilderness of Granite Falls, Wash., the quiet beauty of the trees and the magically calming nature of the lake there. These inspired her to write a book for her grandchildren, a children’s tale that would take them to another place and time, to the forests of the fey, where they could partake in “The Adventures of Loriel the Wood Fairy”.

It is the story of a wood fairy who, though 200 years old, is merely beginning to journey out as a young fairy growing up. Her name is Loriel, and worried by the lack of communication from her Grandfairy Cyce, she journeys to her cottage in the Forest of Echoes to find it empty, for Grandfairy Cyce has been kidnapped by a goblin. Together with Padra the house mouse and Anya the pet hummingbird, Loriel must save her relative before it is too late. The pursuit is frantic and Loriel is fraught with worry, for she knows that goblins are dangerous, not to mention smelly, and she needs to come up with a plan that will not endanger her Grandfairy.

Her adventures show the strength and courage of seemingly small individuals can overcome overwhelming odds and lead to victory, an important lesson for young readers everywhere as they see the courage, trust, love and strength displayed by the protagonists, as well as Loriel’s love for her Grandfairy Cyce.
