Rx: Color Therapy Is Prescribed

Happy Hues Drive Back Recession Blues in New Fabric Collections from Calico Corners - Calico Home

(Vocus/PRWEB ) March 6, 2009 -- Desperate for good news and an economic climb-out? Colors popping up in spring decorating collections could offer your home just the tonic it needs for recovery. "More than ever, it's uplifting to walk into a home with cheery colors and furnishings that you treasure," says Jan Jessup, director of communications for Calico Corners - Calico Home, the home decorating retailer with 100 stores nationwide.

Graphic prints from designer Thomas Paul instantly update a dull sofa or a boring bed. A pair of pillows can enliven a room. On a whole sofa? Stunning!

"A strong nesting instinct is kicking in," Jessup reports. "Customers are starting decorating projects--large or small--for mental health reasons. We may not be able to control the outside world, but we can control our world--it feels good to re-do, renew and refresh!"

Design trends this season are responding. At Calico, new fabrics range from soft and soothing to bright and vibrant. Favorites include:

  • Graphic floral prints in vibrant colors are a little retro, a little mod, very today. They're great paired with slubby linens, natural cottons or lustrous silks.

  • Geometric designs, whether woven, printed or embroidered, add subtle pattern to a room. Designs inspired by classic architectural elements include fretwork, interlaced lines, circles and Greek key meanders.

  • Classic relief prints in shades of indigo blue offer a fresh take on blue-and-white traditional when married with natural linen and white cotton matelassé.

  • Color-drenched fabrics are the essence of spring in leafy lime greens, cherry blossom pinks and raspberry--and look as fresh as a garden party.

  • Asian influences evoke the sights and sounds of the bazaar with lacquer red colors, ikat and paisley patterns and jacquard wovens that have the look of hand embroidery.

Color Cues and Trend News

Yellow--but not so mellow--is the top color forecast to pop in 2009. "Saturated yellow gives us energy," notes Jessup. "Call it 'sun gold' or 'mimosa' or something else, it's guaranteed to make you happy."

A subtler "lemongrass" yellow (think Michelle Obama's inaugural outfit) is also a growing trend. A golden yellow, tinged with green, lemongrass represents optimism and hope to many. Lemongrass marries well with many colors--try combining it with periwinkle or plum for a snazzy combination.

And speaking of plum, mauvey plums, dusty violets and rich purples are hot fashion colors that are moving onto the home scene in a major way. Paired with linen shades, they add depth to traditional décor and complement the yellow greens that have been so prevalent lately.

Complex neutrals in flax, platinum gray and mocha provide safety but still intrigue when mixed with candlelight yellow, watery blue, light plum or kiwi green.

Finally, there's nothing 'blue' about blue! Blue is ever-calming, evoking sky and sea. For decades, it was the number one color in home decorating but has been upstaged lately by green. It's now poised for a major comeback.
