Dr. Lawrence Ressler, Boca Raton and Delray Beach implant dentist and periodontist, is the first doctor in the area to be certified in Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™, for correction of receding gums without sutures or cutting. This less invasive method of treating gum recession causes only minimal post-operative pain, discomfort, bleeding and or swelling, and results of this “lunch-time gum lift” are instantly recognizable on the day of the procedure.
Gum recession affects many people, and can be caused by normal aging, patient grinding or clenching habits, or the overzealous brushing of teeth. Patients may recognize the cosmetic deformity caused by this loss of gum and bone from root surfaces, and the unsightly elongation of teeth noticeable when they smile. They may also notice gum recession through the uneven appearance of teeth, crowns, or other dental work, or may feel sensitivity to hot or cold on the roots of their teeth. Without attention, gum recession may often progress, creating a worsening condition, and sometimes leading to loss of teeth.
Dr. Ressler describes the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™ as “truly unique in that it eliminates the traditional cutting and sewing of the gums and removal of gum tissue from the roof of the mouth…The recovery is faster, the pinhole closes usually within 24 hours, and there is no longer a painful wound on the palate requiring extended healing time.” Older gum surgery techniques were more suited for treating only a few teeth at a time, often taking months to correct gum recession over many exposed roots. The Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation method, however, allows for the treatment of multiple teeth, even a whole arch of teeth, in one single treatment session. How it works: Dr. Ressler, a Boca Raton implant dentist and periodontist, uses specialized instruments patented by the technique’s inventor, Dr. John Chao, and gently loosens the gum tissue over teeth with exposed roots and gum recession, and guides healthy tissue down over the affected areas to cover the roots. Patients achieve normal, healthy-looking gums with a minimum of discomfort and inconvenience, and return to normal activities the next day. Tiny strips of soft collagen are used to stabilize the corrected gum tissue and promote healing. This proven method and a 33-month study of 43 patients has been published in the prestigious peer-reviewed International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry in October of 2012. While not fully studied, it is believed that gum recession around dental implants can also be corrected using the lunch-time gum lift technique.
Some dental and periodontal patients will also benefit from the replacement of old discolored tooth fillings and replacement of poorly fitting crowns to achieve optimal cosmetic dentistry results either before or following the gum rejuvenation procedure.
Dr. Ressler received his dental degree (DMD) from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (cosmetic and general dentistry) and his specialty residency in periodontics with training in dental implant surgery at New York University. Dr. Ressler is a practicing cosmetic implant dentist and periodontist with over 20 years experience, most of it in Palm Beach county.
