Charlotte School Of Law Prepares For Commencement Of First Graduating Class
The inaugural class of Charlotte School of Law (CharlotteLaw), Charlotte's only law school, has a bit more than finals on their mind at the end of this spring semester.
Charlotte, N.C. (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 12, 2009 -- The inaugural class of Charlotte School of Law (CharlotteLaw), Charlotte's only law school, has a bit more than finals on their mind at the end of this spring semester. For the first time ever, students at CharlotteLaw are eyeing graduation on May 17, 2009.
For this inaugural event, Honorable Allyson Duncan, U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, will be the keynote speaker. Duncan is the only NC judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, and is the first African American woman ever to serve in that capacity.
Duncan received a BA from Hampton University in 1972 and a JD from Duke University School of Law in 1975. She was an associate editor at the Lawyers Co-Operative Publishing Company from 1976 to 1977. Duncan then served for one year as a law clerk to Judge Julia Cooper Mack of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals from 1977 to 1978.

Honorable Duncan was the first African American woman to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit and it is truly an honor to have her usher the first group of successful CharlotteLaw alumni out into the community," says Dennis Stone, interim dean of Charlotte School of Law. "Charlotte School of Law has become a valued member the Charlotte community and I could not be more pleased with both the students and faculty of Charlotte School of Law."
Sixty one students will be receiving their Juris Doctor degree (JD) during graduation. The commencement ceremony will be held at Ovens Auditorium on May 17, 2009.
Over the past three years
Charlotte School of Law has come a long way since it first opened its doors to student in August, 2006. Currently in its 3rd year, the school now has just over 300 students and over 25 well respected and renowned faculty members. CharlotteLaw received provisional ABA Approval in June, 2008 and is on track to earn full approval in the next 2 years.
In August of 2008, the School moved to its permanent location in Bryant Park in west Charlotte. Designed to maximize the learning experience for the school's students, the four-story, 102,000 square foot building houses classrooms, a 100,000+ volume law library, offices, clinics, a moot court, meeting space, and student organization areas.
The students and faculty have seen many successes and accomplished much over the past three years. Most recently, CharlotteLaw students were awarded for contributing over 19,340 hours of free legal service to the community through the school's Experiential Learning Program (Pro Bono and Externships).
