Smart Resources' Chicago Hiring Survey Reveals Mixed Signals
A recent HR and corporate hiring survey conducted by Chicago staffing firms Smart Resources Inc. and Accountable Search LLC, revealed a mixed assessment regarding future hiring plans in the Chicago market.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 7, 2009 -- A recent HR and corporate hiring survey conducted by Chicago staffing firms Smart Resources Inc. and Accountable Search LLC, revealed a mixed assessment regarding current and future hiring plans in the Chicago market.
Chicago Staffing Job Survey
The staffing survey of a variety of large and small Chicago-based firms showed that 33% of respondents believe they are adequately staffed given the demands of the marketplace for their goods/services. While 23% were reducing headcount, and/or plan on doing so in the future, 29% were actually growing staff.
Looking into market as a whole, human resources and other company managers foresee a decline in mass layoffs (6%). But the bleeding is not over according to 35% of respondents who see continued selective layoffs with a hiring freeze in place; another 39% also see more selective layoffs alongside selective hiring to upgrade positions or fill gaps.
"The survey seems to prove out what we've seen in past recessions: larger companies reducing headcount to save costs, and the smaller, entrepreneurial firms growing as we begin to come out of the woods," reported Tim Flood, President of Smart Resources Staffing and Accountable Search.
As business conditions improve, 29% of the Chicago companies surveyed will look to current employees for referrals to fill new positions, while 27% will use media such as online, newspaper or trade magazines to find candidates. Almost 13% of respondents said they would use recruitment or temporary staffing and project management firms to help for future hiring.
The use of administrative and financial temporary and project staffing is becoming more popular as over 56% of companies who responded currently employ temporary or project staffers to manage their workflow.
"There is an obvious synergy between flexible staffing and uncertain economic times. And, about 60% of the temporary job orders we are seeing have the potential to go full-time/permanent," said Flood.
The number one challenge for Human Resource staff or management in the current economic climate is employee morale at 54%. Managing the recruiting process was number two staffing challenge at 17%. Other challenges ranged from benefits and technology issues to performance management and cultural fits for companies looking to fill limited spots.
