Baier Media Room Advances Critical Care At Children's National Medical Center
Children's National Medical Center dedicated the Paul Francis Baier Comprehensive Media Room on May 1, 2009.
Washington, DC (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 5, 2009 -- Children's National Medical Center dedicated the Paul Francis Baier Comprehensive Media Room on May 1, 2009. The room was created through a generous gift from Bret and Amy Baier and Amy's parents Paul and Barbara Hills in honor of Paul Francis Baier who received life-saving cardiac care at Children's National.
Paul Baier, 22-month-old son of Fox News anchor Bret Baier and his wife Amy, required a complicated surgery for five congenital heart defects when he was just 12 days old. After Paul was treated at Children's National Medical Center, the Baiers and the Hills made a generous gift to the Children's National Heart Institute to advance the treatment of children with congenital heart disease. "Our family is very proud to be a part of making Children's National Medical Center the most cutting edge facility," commented Baier. "We are convinced our Paul would not be here today if it weren't for the amazing work done there."
The Baier Comprehensive Media Room enables critical care medical staff to have access and review diagnostic images and tests in one place, providing the unprecedented ability to make highly informed diagnostic and treatment decisions in a time-sensitive and life-saving manner for our most critically ill patients. Children's National Medical Center is the first application of this technology in a medical environment.
"This technology brings a new standard to the medical field and to critical care medicine," according to David Wessel, MD, senior vice president of the Center for Hospital-Based Specialties at Children's National. "This large format screen in the heart of the intensive care unit permits seamless, simultaneous display of both real-time and stored images from multiple sources during telemedicine conferences with our colleagues around the globe."
David Stockwell, MD, medical director of the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's National, added, "We have the ability to do rapid diagnosis with different imaging techniques on one screen. This becomes a diagnostic center as well as an educational center. We will have a digital library to train current and future pediatric critical care medicine leaders and ultimately provide the best treatment for our patients."
Children's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a leader in the field of care for patients with critical illness and their families. The PICU treats more than 1,400 patients from across the United States and abroad. In addition, Children's National has the region's only Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, dedicated to caring for infants and children with congenital heart conditions.
