The Children's Cancer Foundation leadership including Shirley Howard, president and founder, and Children's National leadership were on hand to celebrate the newly constructed spaces. According to Peter Holbrook, MD, chief medical officer at Children's National, "We are proud of the long-standing partnership between the Children's Cancer Foundation and Children's National. We thank Shirley and the Children's Cancer Foundation board members for their persistence and commitment to making life better for children with cancer."

Howard said, "The Children's Cancer Foundation is proud to have been a supporter of the Children's National Medical Center for almost 20 years. At that time there was a tremendous need for facilities for children with cancer. By building treatment and infusion rooms, playrooms, family areas, laboratories and supporting researchers at Children's National, the Children's Cancer Foundation has been able to help Children's National provide exceptional care in pediatric oncology."

Each year, Children's National treats approximately 225 children as new cancer patients. The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders has become one of the most respected pediatric cancer and blood disorder treatment programs in the world by increasing the life expectancy and dramatically improving the quality of life of many patients. Children's National is working to better understand, and ultimately develop better treatments, for many forms of childhood cancers. The hospital also serves as the region's primary access point for many national and international pediatric oncology trials.

"At Children's National, we are committed to providing the very best care we can to all who are entrusted to our care," said Max Coppes, MD, PhD, MBA, senior vice president of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. "We specifically thank Shirley for her vision and unwavering devotion to ensuring that children with cancer receive the best treatments available in comfortable, kid-friendly surroundings."
