Preparing Tomorrow’s High-Tech Workers Today: CompTIA Applauds Efforts of Chicago Public Schools

Nearly 500 students enrolled in tech curriculum; certification testing “blitz” scheduled

Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 5, 2008 -- The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), the world’s leading provider of vendor-neutral certifications for technology professionals, today congratulated the Chicago Public Schools and their students for their ambitious program to educate, train and certify the next generation of high-tech workers.

Nearly 500 students are currently enrolled in the Chicago Public Schools’ Education to Careers information technology (IT) program, which includes instruction on CompTIA certifications, the recognized industry standards for a broad range of IT skills.

On May 5 and 6, students from six Chicago high schools will have the opportunity to sit for CompTIA certification exams. Pearson VUE, the global leader in electronic testing for regulatory and certification boards, is coordinating the “testing blitz” at three high schools in cooperation with the Chicago Public Schools and CompTIA.

Students from Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy, Hyde Park Academy, John F. Kennedy High School, Roberto Clemente Community Academy, South Shore School of Technology, and Thomas Kelly High School are participating in the program.

“On behalf of the leadership and members of CompTIA, I commend all of these students and their instructors for their strong commitment to preparing for careers in the IT industry,” said John Venator, president and chief executive officer, CompTIA. “The skills these students are learning today establish the foundation for personal growth and career advancement in the future.”

Among the certifications that students are preparing for are CompTIA A+, which validates skills needed by computer support professionals; and CompTIA Network+, which validates ability to install, configure and troubleshoot basic networking hardware, protocols and services.

The Chicago Public Schools are active in the CompTIA Education to Careers (E2C) program, which provides educators and trainers with information, tools and resources to prepare individuals for careers in the IT industry. Membership in the CompTIA E2C program is available to all publicly funded high schools and colleges, not-for-profit organizations and government agencies that train individuals to enter the IT workforce.
