DNA-Planet Launches New Service for Customer-Individual Indirect DNA Paternity Testing and Kinship Analysis

bj-diagnostik, under its brand “DNA-Planet”, introduces a newly structured offer for DNA kinship analysis: Every customer receives a tailor-made quotation, which considers the exact analysis necessary to solve the genetic kinship relation in question together with an estimation of the achievable probability of relatedness based on the facts of each individual case. In addition, DNA-Planet consults the customer on how to improve possible test results. Many laboratories offer just one “one size fits all” package for any kind of indirect paternity testing or kinship analysis, which means that many customers overpay to solve more simple analysis problems or cannot get solutions to more complex problems.

Preparing sample swabs for dna analysis

"Kinship testing requires individual consultation and simulation of expected results, not "one size fits all" standard solutions!

bj-diagnostik, under its brand “DNA-Planet”, introduces a newly structured offer for DNA kinship analysis: Every customer receives a tailor-made quotation, which considers the exact analysis necessary to solve the genetic kinship relation in question together with an estimation of the achievable probability of relatedness based on the facts of each individual case.

A simple paternity or maternity test can today be performed at a relatively low cost using standard DNA-analysis and statistical calculations when samples of father, mother and child are available. Indirect paternity testing, used for determining the genetic relationship of siblings if the father is deceased or missing and forensic samples are unavailable, is complex and requires the special expertise available at DNA-Planet. So do other kinship analyses, e.g. to determine genetic family relations for immigration purposes.

Each case of kinship analysis is individual, as the persons available for testing differ. The easiest case of an indirect paternity test is the following: Siblings (e.g. two brothers) would like know if they indeed have the same father. The father is deceased, but there are samples available of his brother or sister. In silico (i.e. in computer simulation), DNA-Planet can determine upfront that the achievable probability of relatedness in this kinship scenario can be app. 90%. If the mother can also be involved in the test, the simulated value reaches up to 95%. If the customer’s case is similar to the one described above he or she can be confident to receive a significant and meaningful test report for the money invested. This test is available for 495 € including 3 test persons and consultation.

A more complex case is kinship testing when only samples of cousins are available and the cousins would like to know if they are indeed cousins or perhaps half-siblings. In this case, the achievable probability of relatedness in a DNA test can be simulated to be app. 50%, which would not be a really helpful result for the cousins. DNA-Planet can use computer simulation to find out, for each specific case, which persons would need to be tested in addition to achieve a more meaningful result. The customer is therefore able to check in advance if he or she can involve the right persons into the test in order to decide whether to perform the test or not. The standard simulation consultation of DNA-Planet is offered free of charge. The final price for the DNA analysis is 495 € including 3 test persons, plus 89 € for each additional person needed to achieve the desirable probability.

The case can be solved more easily if both cousins are male and they are cousins via their male line of breeding (i.e. through their fathers, not their mothers). DNA-Planet can then use the Y-chromosome to establish genetic kinship. DNA-Planet offers Y-chromosome analysis in these cases for only 290 €. In contrast, it is not so reliable to use the X-chromosome because women inherit one X chromosome from their mother and one from their father, whereas man always pass on the same single Y-chromosome to their offspring.

The female line of breeding can be investigated by using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Mitochondrial DNA can be found in all body cells and is passed on from mother to children, to both male and female children. DNA-Planet uses mtDNA-analysis to determine if two siblings have e.g. the same grandmother. These tests are priced individually based on the relationship analysis in question and the number of persons involved.

DNA-Planet offers the necessary scientific expertise to combine the above mentioned methods to achieve the best result in each individual kinship analysis case. Indirect paternity testing and kinship analysis requires the individual customer consultation in order to investigate the various possibilities available in the families affected and to put together the right and most cost-effective package of DNA analysis. DNA-Planet’s unique knowledge of proprietary software programming and simulated expectation values is indispensable in this process. "Our positive customer reviews show that our professional individual consultation is appreciated." says Dr. Michael Jung, CEO at bj-diagnostik GmbH.

bj-diagnostik GmbH, founded in 1998 in Giessen/Germany, under the direction of Dr. rer. nat. Michael Jung, under its brand DNA-Planet, has been one of the first private companies offering DNA paternity testing. bj-diagnostik regularly and very successfully participates in quality assurance measures organized by the German Society of Legal Medicine. Besides simple paternity testing, Dr. Jung is specialized on complex ancestry tests (e.g. sibling tests, indirect paternity testing if the father is deceased, paternity analysis for immigration purposes) and on advising attorneys on DNA traces in criminal law.
