Malvern, PA (Vocus) October 27, 2010
Kay E. Ward, CPCU, is the 2010 recipient of the Jack F. Derrickson Award for Outstanding Course Leadership given by The Institutes. Ward is a producer at the Denver Agency Company in Denver, Colo. The Derrickson Award, which is presented annually, honors a teacher of insurance courses whose students pass The Institutes’ examinations at a rate higher than the national average over an extended period of time.
Ward has worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years, primarily on the independent agency side with experience in personal and commercial lines, production, office management, and insurance recruiting. She earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU®) designation in 1999 and has been teaching classes since 2000. Ward currently teaches courses in the Associate in General Insurance (AINS), the Associate in Insurance Services (AIS) and the CPCU designation programs.
“It can be interesting how life can come full circle at times,” Ward said. “I always wanted to be a teacher but somehow I ended up in insurance, which has been a great career. As I completed the CPCU program I was contacted to market and teach insurance classes through the Community College of Aurora. I welcomed the invitation and have enjoyed each class that I have taught. It not only fulfilled my desire to teach others but inspired me to continue not just my insurance education but to go back to school to complete my bachelor’s degree. If it hadn’t been for the strong mentors along my path I may not have completed the CPCU program, so I feel now it is my duty to mentor others in the program and I welcome the challenge.”
Each year, The Institutes provide for the Derrickson Award winner and a guest to attend the annual CPCU conferment ceremony, held this year in Orlando, Fla., where the recipient is presented with a check for $250 and a Derrickson Award plaque. Peter L. Miller, CPCU, president and CEO of The Institutes said, “Outstanding course leaders such as Ms. Ward have a command of course content as well as the ability to motivate students to want to learn. They display a personal interest in students that encourages them to increase their skills and knowledge and to complete their program of study.”
Ward is past president for the Colorado Chapter of the CPCU Society and recently facilitated formation of Insurance Professionals of Downtown Denver of which she is now president. She also owns and operates Education in Pursuit, a continuing education (CE) seminar company operating since 2005.
This award is named for the late Jack F. Derrickson, CPCU, who served for more than 40 years as a grader of The Institutes’ examinations and for many years as a course leader. Derrickson, who passed away in August 2004 at the age of 92, funded this award to recognize excellence in course leadership.
