Business Leaders Send Clear Message to President on Free Trade Agreements

District Export Council members send united support for Free Trade Agreements to Washington.

Passage of these three Free Trade Agreements will help the small- and medium-sized exporters who are the lifeblood of the American economy.

Washington, D.C. -- District Export Council (DEC) members from across the United States -- representing more than 1,800 U.S. companies -- unanimously passed a resolution in support of the pending Free Trade Agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea, during the National DEC Leadership Forum held at the International Trade Center on April 12.

The DEC resolution “urges the members of the U.S. House and Senate to support this trade legislation which will be coming before the Congress this year."

Tom Norwalk, chairman of the national DEC Legislative Committee, expressed the need for urgency in passing these important FTAs. "Columbia, Panama, and South Korea have all concluded trade agreements with other countries and export competitors of the United States,” he said. “Failure to implement our own trade agreements with these countries could severely disadvantage U.S. exporters and jeopardize job creation."

The DEC resolution notes that exporting is a vital component of the American economy. Today, 95% of potential buyers and 75% of the world commerce is outside the USA. “We must level the playing field in order to help American companies compete in the global marketplace,” said Norwalk.

"Passage of these three Free Trade Agreements will help meet President Obama's goal for doubling U.S. exports and creating new jobs,” added Gregory Sandler, chairman of the National District Export Council. “These agreements will help the small- and medium-sized exporters who are the lifeblood of the American economy.”

DEC members are appointed by the Secretary of Commerce. These international trade professionals use their knowledge and international business experience to act as consultants to small- and medium-sized businesses who want to export their products into markets outside of the United States. Closely affiliated with the U.S. Commercial Service's U.S. Export Assistance Centers, the District Export Councils nationwide are organizations comprised of business leaders from their local communities. For more than 30 years, DECs have served their communities promoting exports for U.S. companies and creating new and higher-paying jobs.
