Viburnum, Mo. (PRWEB) May 1, 2007 -- The Doe Run Company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) was the site of a recent Saint Louis University (SLU) field trip.

Nineteen mineralogy students were joined by John Encarnación , associate professor of geology at SLU, on a tour of Buick Mine and Mill on April 19. The tour was led by Doe Run geologists Carrie Heiling and Craig Hall, mine general foreman Jeff Gibson and mill superintendent Brian Mangogna.

Fully equipped with hard hats, safety glasses, mine lights and self rescuers, the students and their instructor were escorted approximately 1,100 feet below the Earth’s surface to view various types of mining equipment used to break, load and haul ore. The group also toured the mill to learn how ore is crushed and further processed to extract the lead, zinc and copper metals.

The students enjoyed the visit and learned a lot, Encarnación said. “Their education is certainly much more fulfilling with field trips like these,” he said.
