Dr. Patricia Pitts of The Bella Vita Eating Disorder Treatment Program recently appeared on the Dr. Drew show on the topic of Exercise Bulimia. Dr. Pitts appeared with actresses Traci Dinwiddie and Elisa Donovan who discussed their own personal experiences with anorexia and bulimia. Dr. Pitts, a licensed clinical psychologist, shared her expert advice on exercise bulimia and eating disorders.
Exercise bulimia describes individuals who compulsively exercise in order to purge their body of calories. While exercise is generally thought to be healthy and good, too much exercise can have negative effects and be a dangerous behavior contributing to eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. This can be a difficult disorder to diagnose because most people believe that by exercising they are being healthy and, in fact, medical professionals often tell patients to stay active. Symptoms of compulsive exercising may include missing engagements in order to work out, working out while sick or injured, feeling depressed when not able to work out, working out for hours each day, and not resting or taking a day to recover. Exercise bulimia can be very dangerous, leading to injuries, excessively low body fat, dehydration, fatigue, arthritis, osteoporosis, heart problems and reproductive issues. Therapy, support groups, and when needed, treatment programs can help individuals to recover from the compulsive behavior associated with exercise bulimia.
