DuPont: Automotive "Makeover" is Practical Alternative When A New Car is Beyond Reach

Repainting an Economical Choice with Endless Color Options and Environmentally Smart DuPont Finishes

Wilmington, Del. (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 17, 2008 -- An automotive "makeover" might be a practical alternative for consumers who are unable or unwilling to buy a new car because of the economic downtown.

With real estate prices continuing to fall, credit tight and global economic concerns mounting, it's no secret that the automotive industry is feeling the pinch. Consumers interested in buying new cars are finding that many trade-ins don't fetch the prices they might have only a few months ago. In addition, credit is tighter and some manufacturers are getting out of the leasing business, preferring to sell cars outright.

"Few things compare with the feeling of climbing behind the wheel of a new car," said Fred Wissemann, brand manager - DuPont Refinish. DuPont is the world's largest manufacturer of automotive coatings for new cars and the automotive aftermarket. "Automakers are building new cars with advanced materials including high performance polymers, fibers and finishes - many made by DuPont - that reduce weight and improve fuel mileage, so today's new cars are more efficient and durable than ever before."

"If a new car is out of the question, why not extend the life of your current car by dressing it up with fresh paint and a few other aesthetic touches?" Wissemann said. "As long as the vehicle is safe and runs well, this is an option that makes practical sense, given the current economic situation."

According to Wissemann, the cost of a quality repaint depends on a number of variables including the owner's choice of color and special effects, such as metallics and pearl effects. Completely changing the car's color from the factory-applied hue and the need for labor-intensive repair activities can also drive up the cost. Fixing body damage such as dents and dings requires additional time and labor. Removing, rather than masking moldings, trim and other parts also adds to the price tag.

Once the decision to repaint has been made though, the available choices are virtually unlimited, even if the owner's budget is not.

"The standard, no-frills finish is usually an acrylic enamel or, for better durability, a urethane color-coat/clear-coat system," Wissemann said. "But the sky's the limit - we have a product called DuPont™ ChromaLusion® in our DuPont™ Hot Hues® paint line that appears to be one color coming at you and another driving away."

Consumers can even contribute to the fight against global warming by selecting a shop that uses paint based on water rather than solvents derived from petroleum. Fourteen million pounds of air emissions have been eliminated annually since tens of thousands of auto collision repair shops in more than 30 countries began using DuPont water-based paints rather than traditional solvent-based coatings, according to DuPont environmental data. The DuPont™ Cromax® Pro waterborne system was introduced in California last year and is being expanded gradually nationwide.

The latest edition of the DuPont Automotive Systems Global Color Popularity Report announced that white had unseated silver as the most popular new car color after a seven year reign. While automakers offer a fairly limited range of new car colors for mass consumption, the options for repainting older cars lend themselves to virtually limitless options for self-expression.

For example, the Hot Hues® line offers a wide range of finishes - 25 standard colors plus infinite custom matches - that appeal to custom car owners and people who simply want to make a fashion statement. Custom colors include Warp Speed Blue, Atomic Tangerine, Cappucino Craze and Raizin Cane. The vivid Hot Hues® colors are no more expensive than standard DuPont finishes.

Wissemann cautions consumers to do their homework before awarding a paint job to a particular shop. "Get several bids and be sure to include a DuPont Performance Alliance shop on your list," he said.

The DuPont Performance Alliance is a network of shops carefully selected by DuPont for their dedication to quality and customer satisfaction. They use only DuPont finishes and advanced quality control techniques. Consumers can locate a DuPont Performance Alliance shop by visiting www.pa24.com.
