New EV SSL Certificates by DigiCert® Can Protect You from Phishing Fraud

Today's e-commerce businesses face an alarming new threat - Online Phishing Fraud. "Phishing" is the crime of stealing your personal information by imitating a legitimate business. Soon DigiCert will be providing a new weapon to assist in preventing these thieves from stealing your passwords and credit card information.

Lindon, UT (PRWEB) November 16, 2006 -- Today DigiCert Inc., an SSL Security company that specializes in providing High-Assurance SSL Certificates, announced that it will be providing Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates in January. These new "Super Certificates" will combat phishers and online scammers with strong identity authentication to protect consumers from fraud.

As an active member of the CA/Browser Forum, DigiCert helped create the standards for these new EV Certificates, working closely with internet leaders such as Microsoft, Mozilla, and Opera to find new ways to protect online consumers and prevent phishing attacks. EV SSL Certificates will be supported by Microsoft's IE7 in late January, and most other popular browsers are expected to follow suit shortly thereafter.

In October 2006, a US Department of Homeland Security Report estimated that direct financial losses due to phishing alone exceed a billion dollars per year. And this year there has been a significant increase in the number of phishing attacks, with a new twist - now the scammers have been using domain only validated SSL certificates to deceive visitors into thinking the site is legitimate.

This new crime wave is causing widespread fear about the safety of transactions online. "Stronger identity authentication measures are the solution," says Ken Bretschneider, CEO of DigiCert, Inc. "DigiCert has joined the fight against phishing and online fraud, and is committed to making the internet a safer place for personal and financial transactions."

EV SSL Certificates offer you a much higher level of protection against fraudulent websites, in the following ways:

  • A more rigorous validation process that verifies the entity exists legally and physically.
  • Comprehensive identity verification.
  • Verification of the identity's physical address.
  • Verification that the entity has the right to use the domain name.
  • Your browser will clearly display the web site's identification at all times, including contact information.
  • Your browser will display the name of the SSL Certificate Authority (CA) who issued the EV Certificate.
  • Your browser address bar will turn Green when you visit a site using an EV Certificate, confirming that the site is trustworthy as the entity/organization behind it has been Verified as Real and Accountable.
  • You will know immediately if redirected from a legitimate EV site to a bogus phishing site, as it will no longer display as trusted green.

According to the current EV Standards (Draft 11), only organizations classified as being incorporated (legally formed) are eligible for EV SSL, but DigiCert is pushing for a change according to Mr. Bretschneider, who said, "DigiCert feels that the current guidelines do not address a major portion of small and medium businesses. We feel that any legitimate business should be able to protect their customers with the 'green bar' and deservingly build Trust."

Bretschneider continued, "As members of the CAB Forum, we are committed to eventually providing EV Certificates to companies of all sizes without compromising the integrity of the EV standard; as a CA, we are dedicated to immediately providing EV Certificates at a price all companies can afford.”
