The small southern city of Rock Hill serves as an example of creative urban renewal in a new book about economic development in small cities.

Old Town New World makes the case that the Internet, co-work, urban renewal, and the creative class are opportunities that small cities should embrace in order to revitalize their economic development. In addition, it offers a practical framework for a strategy that communities can implement to be more successful in the new economy.

The author Jason Broadwater describes his book as “part treatise, part memoir and part case study of Rock Hill.” In it, he gives a first-person perspective on how he started a collaborative workforce development program using unorthodox methods and partnerships. This project, called The Hive, began in 2011, and has directly contributed to the revitalization of historic downtown Rock Hill.

Broadwater, also the founder of strategic Internet marketing company Revenflo, says he wrote the book hoping to start conversations that can catalyze economic development in other communities.

“I feel that revitalizing Old Town Rock Hill is symbolic of cities and towns all over the United States,” Broadwater says. "The new economy need is knowledge-based skilled labor. These creative and motivated folks can gather and work where ever they choose. Understanding [this] is a critical aspect to success for a small city."
