Independent Voters and Small Business Owners Will Vote Against Congressmen Who Support a Second Stimulus - According to Breaking Zogby/O'Leary Report Poll
Americans resoundingly oppose a second dose of stimulus, according to a recent Zogby International/O'Leary Report poll conducted June 10-13, 2009.
Washington, D.C. (Vocus/PRWEB ) July 15, 2009 -- Last week, multiple news outlets reported that senior Obama administration officials and some members of Congress are mulling a second stimulus bill to jumpstart the economy. Americans resoundingly oppose a second dose of stimulus, according to a recent Zogby International/O'Leary Report poll conducted June 10-13, 2009. The poll surveyed 4,420 voters and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 1.5 percentage points.
The poll also found that any congressmen who support a second stimulus bill may very well be forced to join the 15 million Americans currently in the unemployment line.
Question 1: Some members of Congress have said we need to jumpstart the economy with a second stimulus package. Do you favor or oppose Congress passing a second stimulus package?
A strong majority of Americans (63.2 percent) oppose a second stimulus package (46.6 percent "strongly oppose" and 16.6 percent "somewhat oppose"). Only 29 percent favor a second stimulus, and 7.9 percent are not sure.
In addition, a majority (54 percent) of young voters aged 18 to 29 oppose a second stimulus. Three out of four Independent voters (74.3 percent) oppose a second stimulus, and 55.2 percent "strongly oppose" it. Only 18 percent of Independents favor a second stimulus package, and 7.7 percent are not sure.
A surprising number of Obama voters (38.2 percent) oppose a second stimulus, as does an overwhelming majority of small business owners (71.8 percent).
Question 2: Would you vote for or against your congressman in the next election if they are in favor of a second stimulus package, or does it make no difference to your vote?
Among all American voters, 44.7 percent say they would vote against their congressman if he or she supported a second stimulus package, while only 17.4 percent said they would vote for their congressman (25.9 percent said it would make no difference, and 12 percent are not sure).
A majority of Independents (52.4 percent) say they would vote against their congressman, while only 9.8 percent said they would vote for their congressman (25.3 percent said it would make no difference, and 12.5 percent are not sure).
Congressmen who support a second stimulus bill would also lose the vote of 56 percent of small business owners, and gain the support of only 14.7 percent.
"These poll results provide the perfect blueprint for any congressman seeking early retirement," said O'Leary Report publisher Brad O'Leary. "The results also indicate that Americans have not forgotten the original stimulus bill and are still very unhappy with it. Were they happy with the first stimulus, they would not be so vehemently opposed to the mere notion of a second stimulus."
