Executives Receive Ethics And Finance Training

Organizations are looking for ways to counter what many people see as a decline in ethical behavior, at a time when the public has grown increasingly skeptical of executive decision-making.

Portland, Maine (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 20, 2009 -- Organizations are looking for ways to counter what many people see as a decline in ethical behavior, at a time when the public has grown increasingly skeptical of executive decision-making.

That was a key message presented in Portsmouth, N.H., on May 15 to more than 80 executives from not-for-profit organizations and from the financial-services industry. They were participating in a day-long seminar, "Ethical Leadership in Changing Times and Not-For-Profit Finance Update," sponsored by Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker, the leading CPA and consulting firm headquartered in northern New England.

"Ethics are good business," said Martin Taylor, Director of the Center for Corporate Ethics at the Institute for Global Ethics in Rockland, Maine. Noeline Thomson-Bee, President of Rhode Island-based Capp Consulting Partners, joined Taylor to provide a framework for how people and organizations can make the best ethical decisions when confronted with difficult choices.

"I never thought of ethics as a process" before the May 15 event, said John McGinn, Controller of OHI, a provider of services to people with disabilities based in Hermon, Maine. But the presentation provided a step-by-step method for making decisions. "This process would speed things up and give you confidence in decisions when you make them."

Participants worked through a variety of hypothetical ethical dilemmas, based on real-world situations, using the Ethical Fitness® techniques being presented. The executives also were encouraged to make sure that a high standard of ethics is imbedded in their organizations' cultures.

"A strong culture does give you protection," said Scott W. Ventrella, who is Managing Director of the Institute's Center for Corporate Ethics and the keynote speaker in Portsmouth. "It does set a standard."

Participants, who came from as far away as Rhode Island and mid-state Vermont, spent the afternoon focused on not-for-profit finance topics, including audit, tax and accounting issues, as well as Form 990 and new 403b employee benefit plan audit requirements. Many also participated in an hour-long bonus session on the New Hampshire Uniform Prudent Management Institutional Funds Act.

"We're pleased that executives from across New England were able to come together and discuss these important topics, at this thought-provoking event," said John M. Chandler, who is Managing Principal at Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker. "It's obvious that the participants were engaged in the discussion and came away with information that will help them in the future."
