Model railroaders rejoice. ExactRail, a company that specializes in authentically detailed model railroad products, has released its P-S 50' "Waffle" Box Car. The N-Scale model train car is a detailed replica of the 1974 Southern Railway cars. Waffle-like impressions stamped into the side panels helped accommodate the transport of lading equipment, and gave the cars a distinct look.
“ExactRail has had the HO version of the P-S 50’ ‘Waffle’ Box Car in our product lineup for several years. We’re excited to offer this extremely popular car to the N-Scale community as well,” said Blaine Hadfield, product vice president for ExactRail. “The Southern Railway created nearly 5,000 of these box cars. It’s definitely a signature classic for any collection.”
Pullman-Standard in Bessemer, Ala., built the Southern Railway cars in 1974. Many of the 70-ton box cars are still in service today. Several railroad companies operated similar style cars, with the majority of those fleets in the Norfolk Southern and CSX companies. Cars with different waffle-style patterns are also found today.
With design, engineering and mold making performed in the United States, ExactRail’s waffle box car is available in seven true-to-life paint schemes with highly accurate lettering and logos. The new model is available for purchase at exactrail.com.
