Cleaning Up Aviation with AIRE

Saving fuel and reducing the carbon footprint of aviation are the goals of a partnership between the United States and Europe and the subject of a new video produced by the Federal Aviation Administration available on YouTube.

(Vocus/PRWEB ) August 26, 2009 -- Saving fuel and reducing the carbon footprint of aviation are the goals of a partnership between the United States and Europe and the subject of a new video produced by the Federal Aviation Administration available on YouTube.

AIRE - the Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions - has been conducting operational trials almost daily since early June to demonstrate the environmental benefits of "route optimization" and "tailored arrivals" from Europe into Miami International Airport.

In the United States, these test flights fall under plans for the Next Generation Air Transportation System, the transformation of aviation using 21st century technology to improve safety, increase capacity and reduce the environmental effects of aviation.

The FAA and the Single European Sky ATM Research, or SESAR, are working with American Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, TAP Portugal and Air Europa to collect data about the flights.

Already, significant fuel savings are being realized as airlines and air traffic controllers use new technology and new ideas to streamline air travel across the Atlantic Ocean. Data collected now will be used to determine the future of the program and, if successful, how it might be applied elsewhere.
Other FAA-produced videos can be viewed on YouTube. More information on NextGen is available at the FAA's Web site.
