The SunTrust Foundation Center for Financial Education at Wake Technical Community College has announced testing results from its inaugural Financial Empowerment Workshop Series. The first students to complete the National Financial Educators Council’s four-part Financial Empowerment Workshop Series were drawn from GED (General Education Degree) and ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes.
Financial illiteracy has reached epidemic proportions in our country, resulting in major problems at both the community and the national levels. Wake Tech chose a proactive approach to address these issues by offering a comprehensive workshop series. Results of the training, which combined instructor-led coursework with multimedia and interactive components, were gathered through surveys, pre- and post-tests.
Of the 79 participants that took the course, pre-test results show only 37 students passing. The post-test showed substantial improvement with 72 of the students passing a 20 question test. The test also showed that most of the students were not able to calculate their “take home” pay with only 7 having knowledge on the ‘rule of 72’ on the pre-test. This number jumped to 52 students answering this question correctly on the post-test.
On the student survey the response to the statements “I feel more confident about the money topics covered in this course” and “the information presented is something that will benefit me” were rated 4.32 and 4.47 out of 5. This demonstrated they felt more confident and they believe the coursework will benefit them. The instructor, Kimberly Knox, also received high marks with the participants rating her a 4.75 out of a possible 5.
Wake Technical Community College is fully committed to designing a comprehensive financial education initiative for prospective students, current students, staff, and faculty. The planning, implementation and assessment of the financial literacy program is a collaborative effort between Wake Tech’s administration, Foundation Office, GED/ABE Programs, Student Activities Office, Financial Aid Office, Promotions & Marketing and Curriculum Education Services. The college is dedicated to providing this holistic financial education initiative in order to increase financial literacy and allow participants to achieve financial freedom and empowerment.
