Artistful.com includes all art mediums and allows artists to self-price content and sell directly to art buyers. Artistful.com has already attracted more than 3,000 artists selling 14,500 pieces of work.
"Artistful.com brings original art to the masses and empowers artists to be entrepreneurs," said Artistful CEO Christopher Weems. "Already, thousands of artists are using our blogs, news feeds and messaging capabilities to connect directly with their customers and they're selling lots of art. A graduate of the Ringling College of Art and Design, Weems wanted to provide an avenue for the everyday person to shop for original art.
"I know most people are insanely intimidated by art galleries and art itself," he said. "I thought if people had the chance to browse artwork, read a history of that artist and the story behind each piece, it might make them more comfortable with the art buying process."
Traditionally, the art industry has been defined by high-end art sold in exclusive galleries, mass market productions sold at retail chains or one-off auctions on sites like eBay. Never before has there been a marketplace that allows real artists to sell their original work to millions of potential buyers from around the globe. Art buyers can learn about the artists by reading blogs about their philosophies and methods, the history of every piece of art and interacting directly with the artist themselves, something previously reserved for only the most affluent art purchasers.
"As a new home owner, I wanted to decorate my house with unique, original art instead of going to one of the big chains," said Artistful.com buyer Virginia Hughes of Miami. "The problem was that I didn't have a large budget. So, I used the price searching features on Artistful.com to find art in my price range. The best thing is that I know the art is original and can tell all my friends the story behind each piece."
Megan Monahan of Morgantown, W.V. bought an abstract oil painting on Artistful.com in February. She liked the search feature that allowed her to find the exact size and style for her needs. She communicated directly with the artist, hearing the story behind the painting, which confirmed her decision to buy.
"Creating that connection was beneficial to both of us," she said. "As an interior designer, I am always looking for art. My buying experience on Artistful.com was easy and fast."
In a new feature on Artistful.com, art buyers can solicit custom artwork by creating projects that define their exact needs. Artists can bid on creating the custom artwork.
Lauren Rhoden of Winchester, Mass. commissioned an artist on Artistful.com for a custom painting of her two-year-old daughter. She wanted an Impressionist-style painting and found an artist who was a perfect fit.
"It was our first time commissioning a piece and I would certainly repeat the experience again based on the outcome!" she said. "We could not have been happier with the painting."
