With increased pressure on the LAFD to catch up on building inspections, Fire Protection Group Inc. says that businesses need to work with an experienced fire safety firm to ensure they pass their inspection.

Fire pumps are crucial in getting water to the places that need it most.

It is important for local businesses and building managers to make sure that their buildings are up to code, and their safety systems are working properly before an inspection.

According to an article published by the L.A. Times on June 16th, the Los Angeles Fire Department is “months and [possibly] even years behind on inspections” that are meant to ensure that the city’s buildings are up to code for fire safety. Public officials are urging the LAFD to bring in outside help in order to drastically reduce and eventually eliminate the backlog. Los Angeles fire safety firm Fire Protection Group Inc. says that, in light of this recent spotlight and push to carry out these inspections, it is important for local businesses and building managers to make sure that their buildings are up to code, and their safety systems are working properly before an inspection. Fire Protection Group’s lead engineer, George Saadian, highlights several areas that should be addressed:

  • Fire Sprinklers – According to Mr. Saadian, who regularly designs and installs custom fire sprinkler systems for local businesses, these systems have proved vital in stopped the spread of a fire throughout a building from its point of origin. While many believe that fire sprinklers are meant to immediately extinguish flames, and they often do, their true purpose is to contain a fire to the small area that it began until the fire department can arrive. This, says Fire Protection Group Inc., means that a working system can save lives and massive property costs by stopping a fire from spreading to neighboring rooms or buildings.
  • Fire Alarms – While sprinklers are important in stopping a fire from spreading, fire alarms are necessary to let residents of a building know that they need to evacuate. Mr. Saadian notes that these systems, even if installed properly, require inspections to keep them working properly, so it is important for businesses to assess the current state of their systems before a LAFD inspection.
  • Fire Pumps – One of the less visible and often ignored aspects of a complete fire safety system are the fire pumps required for getting water with the proper pressure to the sprinklers that need them. Mr. Saadian notes that these pumps also carry water to spigots on the higher levels of tall buildings that fire fighters connect their hoses to in order to access water near the site of the fire.
