A new book by an experienced writer and writing instructor shows readers how to add wit and sparkle to their everyday writing. Michael Dolan is officially announcing the release of “Funny Business: Putting humor in your writing,” a second edition extensively expanded and updated for the modern workplace.
A former journalist, Dolan draws on more than two decades of teaching and consulting on business writing. His original observations and recommendations come from front-line experience working with thousands of writing students in classrooms, at job sites, and online.
Available for all electronic devices, “Funny Business” tells readers how to add humor to emails, tweets, and reports without getting into trouble. Chapters include The Basics of a Working Joke; Why Humor is a Good Idea at Work; The Secret to Puns; and Science Discovers Keys to Humor.
Recent well publicized stumbles by presidential candidates emphasize the importance of learning how to do humor right. Business leaders agree. Nearly eight in 10 executives (79 percent) said an employee’s sense of humor is important for fitting into the company’s corporate culture, according to a new survey from major staffing firm Robert Half, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times.
“We often have fun in the on-site or college writing classes,” said Dolan. “So people asked me to teach them how to be funny at work. The topic is actually quite delicate so I promised I would work on it and get them something someday.” The eBook technology was a little ahead of its time when the book was first published but that has obviously changed, he said.
Many people try to add funny little remarks to their memos or reports, Dolan observed. And it’s even more popular today with the shorter tweets and other internet comments. But people keep making the same simple mistakes that often cause their jokes to backfire on them. “Funny Business” shows readers how to put together jokes that actually work with people and make the writer look better, not worse. This fun and easy book is ready to download so people can draw on it now and whenever they need it, according to the publisher.
“There really wasn’t another book like this one with humor and practical ways of putting it to use in the real world,” Dolan said. “Some books cover humor; other books teach business writing. But there was nothing that accomplished both.”
