California Now Has 149 GREENspot E-Waste Recycling Locations
With more e-waste recycling locations added each week, Californians have a convenient way to safely dispose of their unwanted or obsolete electronics
San Jose, Calif. (Vocus/PRWEB ) October 22, 2008 -- ASL Recycling's GREENetwork continues to expand up and down California, and now most households and businesses are within five miles of a convenient and free recycling center. 23 new GREENspot e-waste drop-off locations were added in the last month, bringing the total to 149 GREENspots statewide. As consumer awareness of these neighborhood e-waste recycling locations grows, hundreds of residents and businesses are visiting a neighborhood GREENspot location every month -- 8.3 million pounds of e-waste have been diverted from local landfills so far this year.
As one of the largest state approved e-waste recyclers in the state, ASL Recycling started the GREENetwork earlier this year to make getting rid of unwanted and obsolete electronics as easy as it is to buy new ones. "We also wanted to provide consumers and businesses a solution that offers data security and environmental integrity," explains Carey Levine, vice president of sales and marketing. All e-waste dropped off at a local GREENspot location goes directly to ASL Recycling, where the electronics are completely dismantled and recycled.
The company is on track to attain its aggressive goal of ensuring 9 out 10 households in the state are within five miles of a GREENspot, and continues to emphasize public education about e-waste through community outreach, e-waste collection events, and mass-media campaigns.
"We believe that the success of the GREENetwork in California represents a viable alternative to the patchwork of legislation being passed in other states. We are anxious to provide our program to the rest of the country and are working diligently with other states and industry partners to make that happen," says Levine.

What to recycle, and why
E-waste accepted at GREENspot drop-off locations includes TVs, cell phones, audio-video components, computer equipment, microwave ovens, electronic equipment from offices and labs, and more. These items are potentially toxic to the environment and by choosing to recycle them, Californians can help divert e-waste from landfills. All GREENspot drop-off locations feed their e-waste to ASL Recycling's state-approved plants, which use an environmentally friendly e-waste recycling process. What you need to know about e-waste
California is leading the way with its Electronic Waste Recycling Act, the state's e-waste recycling legislation. E-waste, which includes TVs, monitors, computers, cell phones, and other old electronics, is the fastest-growing category of solid waste in the United States. In California, it is illegal to discard the following devices in household and business trash:
- Cathode ray tube (CRT) devices (including televisions and computer monitors)
- LCD desktop monitors
- Laptop computers with LCD displays
- LCD televisions
- Plasma televisions
- Portable DVD players with LCD displays
- Gaming Devices and consoles
Many other electronic devices, though not covered by the Electronic Waste Recycling Act, could be considered hazardous waste and should not be discarded in the regular trash.
