Washington, DC (Vocus/PRWEB ) June 9, 2009 -- U.S. African Chamber of Commerce sends condolences to the people of Gabon and asked them to be patient and bring Democracy to their country. Gabon's President Omar Bongo, who was Africa's longest-serving leader, has died in a Spanish hospital at the age of 73.
Gabon's Prime Minister Jean Eyeghe Ndong issued a statement confirming Mr. Bongo's death Monday, a short time after it was reported by Spanish media outlets.
Mr. Bongo led Gabon for 41 years.
He was admitted to a Barcelona clinic on May 21st, shortly after suspending his duties as Gabon's president.
Officials said he was trying to rest and recover after the recent death of his wife, but media reports described the problem as cancer.
French media outlets initially reported Mr. Bongo's death late on Sunday. Earlier Monday, Gabon's prime minister had denied those reports, saying the Gabonese leader was alive and well.
