Tuscan wine producer Gagliole will debut a new packaging in the 2011 release of its Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG in the United States. The restyled packaging that emphasizes the appellation reflects a renewed focus on terroir-driven Chianti Classico for the estate.
The 2011 Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG is the first vintage to incorporate additional Sangiovese grapes from the La Valletta vineyard in the famous Conca d’Oro, which Gagliole purchased earlier that year. The goal of the acquisition was to optimize the quality of Gagliole’s wines without increasing their production quantities.
The vineyards of La Valletta consist of 10 acres of Sangiovese, 2.5 acres each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards enjoy a south to southwest exposure and have soil rich in humus filled with many small pieces of Bavarese rock that decompose into sand over time. The roots of the vines are therefore forced to grow deep into the earth to find the necessary minerals, thus producing more concentrated fruit.
The 2011 Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG distinguishes itself with notes of floral red fruit, spices and herbs in a soft, inviting style. This red velvet wine is the highest quality Rubiolo released to date.
“We are excited to give our Rubiolo a refreshed image,” says Alessia Riccieri, Gagliole’s export manager, “Reclaiming the appellation’s name is fundamental to Gagliole and to the region. We intend to be at the forefront of Chianti Classico’s quality renaissance.”
In addition to its Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG, Gagliole also offers American wine drinkers two Sangiovese-focused IGT wines, Gagliole Colli della Toscana Centrale and Pecchia Colli della Toscana Centrale.
Gagliole is exclusively imported in the United States by Vias Imports Ltd.
The majority of Gagliole’s vineyards are located within the world-famous Conca d’Oro. The vineyards, which enjoy a south – southwest orientation, are all worked by hand in order to pay attention to even the slightest detail. Vinification of the wines is entrusted to the experienced hands of Dr. Stefano Chiocciolli, a champion of Sangiovese. The secret to the close collaboration between Thomas Bär and Stefano Chiocciolli is a highly analytical approach, which is a prominent personality trait in both. As a result, Gagliole offers the drinker sophisticated wines that flaunt the characteristics of Sangiovese in this unique microclimate.
