According to the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs, there were nearly 9,000 international adoptions in the United States in 2012; this figure doesn’t even count domestic adoptions. In her new book “Who am I, Really?” The True-life Story of an Adoptee Searching for Her Identity” (published by AuthorHouse), author Gale Tobin Holz offers readers a firsthand account of an adoptee searching for her natural parents.
“I want my book to be one of self-help for those who have gone through the same experience as I have in not being able to know my identity or where I come from,” Tobin Holz says. “I know nothing about my background; I do not know my nationality, my birth name, my natural parents' religion or what they did for a living. I wrote about my natural father possibly being in World War II, but that is only speculation, because I was told that my natural mother was a 'war mistress' I believe my natural father fought in World War II."
“Who am I, Really?” is a highly personal book full of memories of Tobin Holz’s adopted family and her own family life. She uses this accessible narrative to tell the story of her unknown past, reinforcing the importance of the details she doesn’t know with the reality of those that she does – in essence, juxtaposing the reality of her adopted life with the speculation of her original one.
About the Author
Gale Tobin Holz is a 68-year-old retired registered nurse and a retired associate of Walmart. She retired from nursing after her third and last child was born because she wanted to be a stay-at-home mother. However, in 1991, because she wanted to search for her natural parents, she decided to return to work, not as a nurse but as a Walmart associate. Nursing had changed too much in the years that she was out of the profession; therefore, she thought that retail would suit her better; thus Walmart was her chosen new line of work. She worked for Walmart for 13 years, retiring in 2006 after her husband Walter had a heart attack in 2005.
