George W. Carrington chronicles a rich lifetime filled with travel, adventure and military service in his new memoir, “I Chose to be a U.S. Marine” (published by AuthorHouse).
Arranged in chronological order, “I Chose to be a U.S. Marine” primarily concerns itself with presenting an account of Carrington’s military career. His time in the Marine Corps took him from Scarsdale, N.Y., to New Zealand, Guam, Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and Washington, D.C. Along the way, he discovered foolishness and stupidity, as well as bravery and heroism.
In addition to his experiences as a Marine, Carrington also discusses his childhood, education and family. The book concludes with stories from his retirement, travel and other adventures.
“It will appeal to readers because it tells of a life and adventures that are rare, not understood often by the military,” Carrington says of his memoir. “I say that when I got that regular commission ‘I swallowed the whole fish.’ (My life) was like that of a teacher, father, preacher, farmer, or scholar, not for money or selling something.”
