(Vocus/PRWEB ) September 12, 2009 -- George Fox University's Department of History and Political Science will host two scholars to discuss the legacy of President Herbert Hoover at its 17th Hoover Symposium, "Hebert Hoover: Conservationist," on Saturday, Oct. 3, in Room 105 of the university's Hoover Academic Building.

Joshua Hawley, author of Theodore Roosevelt: Preacher of Righteousness, will speak on the origins of the conservationist movement. Kendrick A. Clements, author of Hoover, Conservation, and Consumerism, will address the question of whether Hoover was a conservationist, an environmentalist, or something else.

In addition, a panel of experts will consider whether or not history can offer practical lessons for modern environmentalists.

The session is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with the event concluding with tours of the Hoover-Minthorn House, the boyhood home of President Hoover.

Registration and lunch are free for the first 100 people to register. For more information or to register contact Mark David Hall at mhall(at)georgefox(dot)edu or 503-554-2674.

The Hoover Symposium is sponsored by the George Fox Department of History and Political Science. It is directed by Hall, the university's Herbert Hoover Distinguished Professor of Political Science.

From 1885 to 1888, Hoover attended Friends Pacific Academy, which eventually grew into today's George Fox University. The university's Hoover-Hatfield Library in Hoover Academic Building includes several displays of Hoover memorabilia, some of which was donated by former U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield.

George Fox University is ranked by Forbes as one of the top 100 colleges in the country and highest among Christian colleges. George Fox is the only Christian university in the Pacific Northwest classified by U.S. News & World Report as a national university. More than 3,300 students attend classes on the university's campus in Newberg, Ore., and at teaching centers in Portland, Salem, and Redmond Ore., and Boise, Idaho. George Fox offers bachelor's degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-completion programs for working adults, five seminary degrees, and 12 master's and doctoral degrees.
