U.S. House Passes Kirk Resolution Honoring The Hadley School for the Blind

Winnetka-based school teaches more than 10,000 blind and visually impaired students each year in all 50 states and 100 countries.

Winnetka, IL (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 11, 2008 -- The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan resolution authored by Congressman Mark Kirk honoring The Hadley School for the Blind. Based in Winnetka, Hadley is the world's largest provider of distance education to blind and visually impaired individuals, their families and blindness service professionals. Kirk presented the resolution to Hadley trustees, staff, and students on October 16 during a Hadley student awards ceremony at the Skokie Country Club in Glencoe.

"We are honored to be recognized by the U.S. Congress and thank Representative Kirk for his unwavering support," said Charles Young, president of Hadley. "Throughout our 88-year history, we have been the largest provider of distance education to people around the globe who are blind and visually impaired, keeping our courses and technology current to best support lifelong learning."

Since its founding by William Hadley and Dr. E.V.L. Brown in 1920, all of Hadley's distance education courses have been provided free of charge to blind and visually impaired students thanks to contributions from individuals, foundations and corporations. Course materials are available online and also arrive in the mail in Braille, large print and audio formats. Instructors are available to assist students via email, and also by phone in the U.S. and Canada.

"The 10th Congressional District is home to the world's preeminent education institution for the blind and visually impaired," Congressman Kirk said. "Each year, the Hadley School for the Blind serves more than 10,000 students in all 50 states and 110 countries. The overwhelming support in the Congress for Hadley shows just how vital Charles Young and his staff are. Their students get a quality education at no cost, but more importantly, they get the independence to live their lives to the fullest."

Last year, Hadley launched a School for Professional Studies that supports professionals and paraprofessionals who actively work with blind and visually impaired individuals in a school, work or community setting. Courses have a modest tuition; some are offered free of charge.
