Hurricane Sandy was one of the worst storms to hit the eastern seaboard in recent memory, causing billions of dollars of damage, paralyzing public transportation systems and leaving thousands of people homeless. As soon as they were able to re-open their New Jersey headquarters, Hartz®, one of the country's leading suppliers of flea and tick products, began contacting pet rescue groups in the tri-state area to offer support. To date, Hartz® has donated more than $25,000 to Sandy relief efforts throughout the tri-state area to help individuals who were affected by the storm, as well as animal shelters that need support to get up and running again.
In the aftermath of the storm, there were a few areas of New Jersey and New York City that bore the brunt of the winds and heavy rain. As a result, community organizations became distribution centers to give out much-needed supplies, while animal shelters have become stretched thin to accommodate pets who have been displaced by the storm in New York City, the surrounding areas and the Jersey shore.
Animal shelters were particularly in need, as their staff and volunteers tried in earnest to provide for the basic needs of every animal in their care. Hartz® responded by reaching out to these rescue groups and found that they were in dire need of basic items such as dog and cat treats, bedding, dog grooming supplies, pet toys and many other items meant to improve their animals’ quality of life.
For organizations like Mike's Feed Farm, Liberty Humane Society, Bella Bast Rescue Inc., Hempstead Town Animal Shelter and St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, the donations from Hartz® were a blessing that allowed them to better provide for the health and well-being of animals affected by Hurricane Sandy. Hartz® also worked with their longtime rescue partner, Lori Regal, a Michigan resident who supports a variety of animal welfare organizations on Sandy relief. Lori has taken it upon herself to collect and package supplies in her community and send them off to storm-stricken areas on the East Coast where they can make a difference.
The pets of these shelters are already enjoying the comfort of a wide range of Hartz® pet products, including training pads, dog biscuits and cat treats, and plush dog toys. Because many of these establishments function as non-profits, these donations will make an indelible impact and will help the shelters return to running at full capacity in the near future.
Hartz® routinely provides in-kind donations to animal shelters and rescues throughout the year and they encourage organizations to contact them on their Facebook page.
