Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) October 18, 2012
Citing a USA News Today report [Peanut Butter Plant Tests Positive for Salmonella, October 5], HealthyAnswers.com alerted their readers to the current nationwide outbreak of salmonella-tainted peanuts. To date, 35 people have become sickened from salmonella and no deaths have been reported.
The peanuts came out of the Sunland Foods processing plant in Portales, New Mexico and are thought to be in 76 products that have been recalled. These products include their peanut butter products (especially Valencia Creamy brand sold at Trader Joe’s nationwide), and many other peanut-containing items including Starbucks bistro boxes.
HealthyAnswers.com reports that, federal officials recommend consumers to either discard or return recalled products for a refund or store credit. Although other foods may be susceptible to salmonella bacteria, it was thought that perhaps the type of salmonella present (salmonella Bredeney) was more resistant to the plant’s peanut cleaning or roasting process. In another study cited in Scientific American [How Does Salmonella Get Into Peanut Butter? February 2009], which was based on a 2008-2009 salmonella peanut outbreak, it was suggested that contaminants, like water from leaking roofs, or animal feces, may be involved as the source of the salmonella.
HealthyAnswers.com medical expert, Mark Rosenberg, M.D. cautions readers about the symptoms of salmonella poisoning: “Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, weakness. It’s critically important to get medical attention with any of these symptoms, especially if peanut products have been consumed – from any source.”
