In a recent health alert, HealthyAnswers.com warned readers about the dangers of mold allergy that can result in a mild to severe reaction. They report that there are over 100 mold species that people can react to with an itchy, red skin rash that may be hard to diagnose. They may be mistaken as simple contact dermatitis but mold allergy rashes can be much more severe. Many of these molds can be found inside and outside the home. The Allergy Relief Center cites black mold infestation in southern homes at epidemic proportions [Mold Allergy Prevention and Control – Toxic Stachbotrys] and is one type of mold that can cause a bad skin rash. In addition, HealthyAnswers.com warns, mold spores are often breathed in and can cause symptoms ranging from mild, like runny nose, watery, itchy eyes, sneezing, to more severe like wheezing, or even a dangerous anaphylactic (throat swelling, cutting off of breath) response.
HealthyAnswers.com resident dermatology expert, Jay Brachfeld, M.D., explains more about mold allergy: “Mold allergy rashes happens the same way as other contact-dermatitis-type rashes occur. Skin comes in contact with a mold either outdoors, or inside a home or building, and a sensitive person starts to develop histamine bodies in reaction. The American Academy of Allergy and Immunology Outdoor Allergens cites Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporidium and Penicillium type molds as the most common varieties that people most often react to. These are most commonly contacted outside – especially handling wet yard debris like leaves, grass, weeds, fallen tree bark or even just soil. Some people can be very sensitive to these molds and have moderate to severe reactions necessitating immediate intervention with anti-histamines and/or prednisone to quiet the reaction. After treatment, formal diagnosis of mold allergy should be determined with skin testing by an Allergy and Immunology specialist. ”
