Working with KIVA, an online resource that connects donors directly with small business owners, supporters like Potvin can select an entrepreneur to assist then choose a loan amount and track the impact of the aid by following the individual's progress. The goal is to help entrepreneurs achieve economic independence and improve their lives.
"My first loan was to a Peruvian woman who wanted to grow her after-school snack business and needed a loan to increase her output," says Potvin. In under a year, the loan is 100% repaid, the recipient has gained independence and Potvin has had a role in supporting a woman-owned business abroad. In underdeveloped countries, economic barriers can prevent great ideas from developing into a solid business. "KIVA makes it possible for people with fewer resources to follow their dreams. As a business owner I'm glad to play a small part in supporting that work," says Potvin.
Of course there are countless opportunities to give back locally too. For Potvin, whose daughter was a baby when a friend lost her daughter to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), becoming involved in 7 days For SIDS, a Cincinnati based fundraising event organized to raise awareness and fund research to end SIDS, was a natural fit. This year Design To Market will donate 3% of sales during the week-long SIDS event: June 8-14. The company will also help sponsor the Laura Elizabeth Pease Memorial Golf Outing.
