HumanKind Fair Trade, a nonprofit fair trade store in downtown San Luis Obispo, made several changes this year that brought new energy to the store, which recently celebrated its third anniversary.
The nonprofit organization recently welcomed a new board of directors. Laura Mullen, a faithful volunteer and active member of the San Luis Obispo community, was named Board President in January; and the board received several new members. These new board members include Kelly McCay, the art director at local marketing firm Verdin; Frameworks Gallery owner Ali Semon; and Empowering Financial Solutions’ Joan Parker as treasurer. Continuing board members include Jackie Parker, retired deputy district director in administration for CalTrans; community volunteer Sharon Juhnke; and teacher and HumanKind founding member Elizabeth Aebischer.
The nonprofit retail store is located at 982 Monterey Street in downtown San Luis Obispo, Calif. and provides income to artisans and farmers in the developing world by selling their products and telling their stories. The store partners with cooperatives from all over the world, and each item has a unique story of hope. All of the products sold in the store are Fair Trade Certified, or meet the standards of the certification.
“HumanKind Fair Trade is a bright spot in San Luis Obispo where people can find beautiful, handmade items that empower people in the developing world,” Mullen said. “I’m thrilled about the changes we’ve seen this year, and with more community support, we plan to keep growing.”
In addition to organizational changes, store manager Alison Cebulla updated the store’s inventory and interior with a wide selection of clothing for men and women. The new store layout includes a fitting room and racks that display fashionable clothing made by artisans from India, Nepal, Ghana and Peru.
HumanKind also expanded store hours this summer to include Sundays, which was very well received by customers. HumanKind Fair Trade is now open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The store is actively recruiting volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit http://www.humankindslo.org for more information.
