IADT Sacramento Students Provide Comfort for Children Displaced by Wildfires in San Diego

“Million Ways to Care” campaign takes flight.

Sacramento, Calif. (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 9, 2007 -- While most of the nation watched the news of the destructive blaze cutting across Southern California, a 23-year old college student, Denisea Carey, mobilized a school and a community to help families victimized by the recent wildfires. On November 1, delegation of students and instructors was welcomed by the office of San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and then delivered over 500 teddy bears and pillows to displaced children in San Diego.

The ambitious project began just one week earlier when Carey, a student at the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT) made a presentation to her “College Success” classmates – her first ever. She shared how, last year, she was almost homeless and dreamed of helping others without a home. Carey made the same presentation to every IADT class and immediately enrolled more than 100 students in her cause. She was motivated by the concept introduced in “College Success” called “Pass It On.”

IADT administrators opened up a sewing lab at the school that is usually reserved for second year students in order for Carey to sew the teddy bears and blankets. The visual communication students made it a class project to design a web site and flyers immediately went up on the walls around the campus. Another team formed with students who are going to partner with high schools from throughout the state to collect stuffed bears, blankets and other toys. Ultimately the entire student population has been involved in some capacity.

“There are a million ways in which to care — and this movement shows the power and potential of what people can accomplish when we provide tools to help them see greater possibilities,” said Melody Rider, president of IADT Sacramento. “It worked in Denisea’s life. She is living out a dream, and Passing It On to benefit others!”

Assistance came to the students of IADT from many places: the manager of Westfield Roseville Galleria offered 300 teddy bears to be donated for the cause. JoAnn’s Fabrics deeply discounted materials used in making the bears, and Build-A-Bear Workshop in Arden Mall stuffed them. FED-Ex transported the teddy bears as a part of their corporate charity program. Westfield Mall provided the airfare for a group of 14 students and instructors to visit San Diego. While in San Diego, Enterprise provided three buses for their use.

The bears were taken to the Dulzura Red Cross Relief Center and UCSD Medical Center.
