Encino, CA (Vocus/PRWEB) February 18, 2011

The year 2010 was a banner one for the enforcement wing of the IRS. As reported by the Associated Press and other news organizations, the IRS increased the number of returns it audited by nearly 11 percent last year—some 1.58 million individual returns, compared to 1.43 million the year before.

“We saw individual audits increase, reaching the highest rate in the past decade,” said Steve Miller, IRS deputy commissioner for services and enforcement, in the AP report. “The bottom line shows enforcement revenue topped $57 billion, up almost 18 percent from last year.”

“Any notice received from the IRS that changes your tax liability is an audit!” said tax relief expert Michael Rozbruch. He adds that with the IRS enforcement budget at a record $5.5 billion this year, we can expect audits to continue to increase. While the wealthy and big business are most frequently in the IRS’s sights, the government has made it clear that no consumer is too small to be scrutinized, especially in these economically challenged times. The IRS seeks every penny it is due and has an impressive array of enforcement tools to help it collect the money.

Compliance and well-documented, truthful reporting are the best defense if you are faced with an IRS audit. For those consumers who have delinquent back taxes, or have not filed returns for one or more years, the time is now to seek professional tax help from those skilled in the tax problem resolution field.

“However, anyone who fails, intentionally or unintentionally, to file timely and accurate tax returns should know that every taxpayer has the fundamental rights of due process, fairness, and representation, even if the auditor does not explain this to you,” said Rozbruch, founder and CEO of Tax Resolution Services, Co., an Inc. 5000 company.

Consumers who have been selected for an IRS audit should consider hiring a Certified Tax Resolution Specialist with proven audit representation success and experience in negotiating with the IRS.
