Dr. Beck Weathers to Deliver Closing Day Keynote Address at CompTIA Breakaway 2008

Survivor of disastrous Mt. Everest expedition will share inspirational story of second chances and new outlooks on life

Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. (Vocus/PRWEB ) March 26, 2008 -- The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), the leading trade association for the world’s information technology (IT) industry, announced today that Dr. Beck Weathers, who miraculously survived the deadliest day in the history of Mount Everest, will deliver the closing day keynote address at Breakaway 2008, the association’s annual member conference.

Breakaway, the IT industry’s premier partnering and educational event, is scheduled for Aug. 5-7 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

An accomplished pathologist and an amateur mountain climber, Weathers was one of more than 30 climbers descending from Mt. Everest’s summit in May 1996 when a violent storm hit the mountain. Heavy snow, subzero temperatures and hurricane-force winds claimed eight lives within 24 hours.

Weathers was presumed dead and left behind on the mountain by other climbers. His wife and family were notified of his death. But Weathers regained consciousness the following day; and though nearly snow-blind, staggered back to the safety of a campsite and was rescued by helicopter.

“Beck Weathers’ ‘Miracle on Everest’, the second chance he got, and his new outlook on life in which family and loved ones are paramount over all else, is a truly inspirational story,” said John Venator, president and chief executive officer, CompTIA. “He is certain to enlighten the Breakaway audience with the invaluable lessons he learned, having faced his own death and living to tell about it.”

Weathers’ address at Breakaway is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7.

Weathers received his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and chemistry from Midwestern University, and completed his doctor of medicine degree from Southwestern Medical School. Weathers taught at Harvard Medical School; has been a partner in MCD Pathology, LLP; and has served at Medical City Dallas Hospital and LabCorp as co-medical director since 1977.
