Janet Killeen, author of “The Moonlight Foxes,” introduces young readers to a playful, streetwise cat with a knack for adventure in “The Barking Cat” (published by AuthorHouse), which will be featured at the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair.
“The story is written for children between 5–7 years to read with an adult – parent, teacher, older sibling – to enjoy the story and pictures and explore the meaning of Socks’ adventures and experiences,” says Killeen.
Socks is a black and white stray cat who lives with his family in a tough area of London called Barking. Socks spends his days trying to survive along the banks of the Thames and bringing food back to his family, but he dreams of a life of adventure beyond his humble home. When a terrible accident changes his life, how will Socks and his family survive?
An excerpt from “The Barking Cat”:
“Sometimes, in the dreaming times between the last purr and the first deep rumble of sleep, Socks wondered if he had imagined all his adventures. Had he really fought with the sinister Pi-Rats of Gallions Reach? Or rescued his sister Pumpkin and brother Stripes from the horrible jaws of the guard dog behind the used car showroom?”
