Education Site Names Jay Leno 'Educator of the Year for 2008'

Improve-Education.org declares that Jay Leno -- via his Tonight Show segment called JAYWALKING -- has rendered an invaluable service by raising the public's awareness of how sloppily educated many Americans are, and proving dramatically that schools must do a better job. Jay Leno is therefore named Educator of the Year for 2008.
Where did the Pilgrims come from?

Norfolk, Va. (PRWEB) February 7, 2008 -- Improve-Education.org declares that Jay Leno stands above all others in raising educational awareness in the USA. For tens of millions of Americans, Leno's hugely popular JAYWALKING segment provides an easy way to grasp what has befallen the country's public schools.

  • "What body of water lies to the west of California?"
  • "Where did the Pilgrims come from?"
  • "Where is the Eiffel Tower?"

According to Bruce Deitrick Price, Improve-Education.org's creator, "Leno asks the world's easiest questions. But he interviews people on the street who don't know the answers. People who are parents, citizens, voters and sometimes teachers! The thought that these uninformed people are shaping the future of the country is terrifying indeed. Viewers laugh, but they also SHUDDER. And therein lies the tremendous power of what Jay Leno has created here."

  • "Where are the Pyramids?"
  • "Name one of the Great Lakes."
  • "Which is the largest country in South America?"

"Educators," Price notes, "love to discuss their theories and why they always need bigger budgets. Who knows how to evaluate all that? But when Leno talks to adults who don't know what two countries the USA is between -- every viewer exclaims, 'That is so scary! Our schools need to be better.'"

Drum roll, please! Here's part of the Proclamation for Leno's Educator of the Year award:

"Whereas Jay Leno, via the Tonight Show segment called JAYWALKING, has done more than anyone else in the USA to promote the improvement of education ...

whereas Jay Leno has shown many parents what exactly was missing in the education of their children, and that reform in the schools is much needed;

whereas Jay Leno is an inspiration to all true teachers and educators;

whereas, in all these instances, Jay Leno has rendered exceptional public service to the citizens of the United States,

he is hereby designated the Educator of the Year for 2008."

Bruce Deitrick Price, Dir.

For the educators who preside over this decline, there's not much excuse. Too many destructive policies have been allowed into the schools. There are actually educators who preach this mantra: THEY CAN LOOK IT UP, as a pretext for not expecting anyone to learn anything! JAYWALKING makes us confront the inevitable result of this approach.

"Predictably," Price says, "our educators try to deflect criticism by mocking the messenger. Jay Leno, they will say, is just a comedian, an entertainer. With this award, I want to insist: no, no, no. JAYWALKING is as profound as it gets."

Improve-Education.org aspires to be a leading voice for higher standards and greater intelligence in the public schools.

The site presents a cluster of articles that help explain how our public schools became so bad that JAYWALKING could be a feasible comedy bit (and why Bill Gates and Norman Augustine, in "Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century," said that our public schools are a threat to the nation's economic survival). Please take a look at:

20: The Quizz (100 questions every high school graduate should be able to answer -- see Commentary)

21: A Tribute to Rudolph Flesch (why our educators hated him so much, and how they came to pick the wrong way to teach reading)

26: How to Teach History, Etc. (an introduction to ergonomic education; discusses many ways to make schools more efficient)

28: Tips for Helping Your Child Do Better in School (not psychobabble; this is basic stuff that most successful students already know)

30: The War Against Reading (a sweeping indictment of the so-called experts who gave us Whole Word)

Feel free to quote at length from all these works. We are crusading for better schools and welcome any assistance we can get.

Remember, the best thing you can do for the future of a free press is to make sure there are lots of people who can read it!
